1. What function does the prostate perform?

The prostate controls the flow of urine from the bladder into the urethra. Urination requires the prostate’s fibro-muscular tissue to be able to dilate and open the urethral canal as urine passes through the urethra.

2. What causes a prostate to become enlarged?

The most common cause of enlargement of the prostate is benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH). This condition is common among men as they increase in age and becomes increasingly more common as they continue to grow older. Enlargement of the prostate is generally attributed hormonal changes that occur with normal aging over time. It has been reported that between the ages of 40 and 59, nearly 60% of men can be shown to exhibit some symptoms of enlarged prostate conditions produced by BPH. The flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ have been the subject of much research and clinical trials over a period of many years and have been found to be effective as a treatment for the symptoms of BPH.

3. What is benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH)?

The principal effect of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a progressive decrease in the ability to empty the bladder as the prostate enlarges and applies pressure to the urethra. Retained urine from the obstruction can, at first, interfere with sleep as the sufferer is awakened by urgency to urinate during the night (Nocturia). At other times, pressure may make it impossible to properly control urine flow as in incontinence. Retained urine in the bladder may lead to bacterial growth and infection. In more severe cases it may lead to infection in the kidneys and may find its way to the blood with toxic consequences. Hormonal changes associated with normal aging are believed to play a significant role in the development of BPH. BPH has been studied extensively in relation to flower pollen extracts with favorable results.

4. What symptoms indicate a man has BPH or an enlarged prostate?

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate can include:

  • Difficulty in urinating.
  • The feeling the bladder is not emptying normally.
  • Weak or intermittent urine flow.
  • Feeling an urgency to urinate.
  • Frequent urination.
  • The need to urinate excessively at night (Nocturia).

5. What are suspected causes of BPH?

Prostate enlargement has been shown to be strongly related to normal aging. The decline in normal testosterone production with increasing age typically leads to the compensatory release of other hormones. These cannot prevent the decline in testosterone levels but can lead to an elevated level of transformation of testosterone into 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the increased binding of DHT to prostate cells or the decreased clearance from prostate cells, ultimately resulting in enlargement of the prostate.

6. We hear a lot about DHT. What is it and how does it relate to an enlarged prostate?

5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone (androgen) produced as a byproduct of testosterone. The normal male aging process leads to the decline in testosterone levels over time. This decline in testosterone can lead to an elevated level of transformation of testosterone into DHT and the increased binding of DHT to prostate cells or the decreased clearance from prostate cells, ultimately resulting in enlargement of the prostate. Researchers believe pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ have a positive effect in reducing the formation of the hormone DHT.

7. What is Prexamed™?

Prexamed™ is a specialty flower pollen extract formulation designed and used for the treatment of a variety of prostate problems and the purpose of promoting urogenital health. It is a proprietary combination of water-soluble and lipid-soluble fractions prepared from a defined set of flower pollen sources. The pollen extract fractions are standardized according to proprietary minimum amino acid and phytosterol content profiles to provide uniform consistency in Prexamed™. Potential allergens are removed as a part of the refining process. There have been no reported incidents of significant allergic reactions or adverse side effects associated with Prexamed™.

8. What are the benefits of using Prexamed™?

The primary benefits of Prexamed™ specialty flower pollen extracts are:

  • Reduced inflammation in the urinogenital tract and reduced prostate congestion.
  • Improved ability to fully empty bladder by relaxation of urethral smooth muscles.
  • Inhibiting the binding of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to prostate cells.

The most immediate benefit of the flower pollen extracts in Prexamed™ is the reduction in size of the prostate and reduction in prostate congestion over a period of several weeks. The recommended initial dosage amount is two capsules per day, but may be doubled to four capsules per day if desired. Prexamed™ should be taken on an empty stomach.

9. Where can I get Prexamed™?

Prexamed™ has not been available in the United States for many years and is available exclusively from Toomey Health Products, LLC. Toomey Health Products, LLC is the sole supplier of Prexamed™.

10. Is Prexamed™ a drug?

Pursuant to FDA guidelines and the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), Prexamed™ is a dietary supplement - not a drug. Prexamed™ is a specialty formulation of flower pollen extracts designed to enhance urogenital health that has been extensively researched for over 50 years.

11. How does Prexamed™ work?

Flower pollen extracts have been researched as a treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH) for over 50 years and have been the subject of numerous research papers and clinical trials. In order to gain the benefits for treatment of urinary tract issues (in both men and women), specific water-soluble and lipid-soluble extracts are combined in sophisticated processes to produce the specialty formulation of flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™. (See “Does Prexamed™ play a role in women’s health?) As reported in 1998 in the article “Pollen Extract – A Literature Review” published in the Partners Magazine of AIM International, the literature on pollen extracts focuses on three physiological effects: 1. smooth muscle contraction, 2. anti-inflammatory action, and 3. effects on enzymes. Smooth muscle contraction is important in prostate issues because muscle contraction plays a role in allowing the bladder to void. Research has concluded the flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ alter the way certain substances bind with prostate cells and act as anti-inflammatories. Anti-inflammatory action is important because many prostate and other urinary tract problems involve inflammation that contributes to enlargement of the prostate. Additionally, researchers believe the pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ have a positive effect in reducing the formation of the hormone 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), believed to be a causal factor in developing benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH).

12. How long should I take Prexamed™? At what level?

The recommended dosage should be taken for six months. After approximately that time, an ongoing maintenance dose equal to one-half the recommended amount may be continued on a daily basis, unless symptoms reoccur. Should symptoms reoccur, the daily amount may be increased back to the recommended dosage amount. ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN CONCERNING ALL HEALTH-RELATED CONDITIONS AND CONCERNS AND KEEP HIM OR HER INFORMED ABOUT ALL MEDICATIONS AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS YOU ARE TAKING (INCLUDING “NATURAL” OR HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS).

13. Prexamed™ vs. Saw Palmetto and Beta-sitosterol.

First, saw palmetto and other such products do not have any clinical evidence of significant efficacy against prostatitis and prostatodynia. In clinical trials, flower pollen extracts have been shown to be useful in a wider range of conditions than is true of other natural therapies, including not only benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but also the treatment of prostatitis, prostatodynia, and non-specific urethritis. Second, saw palmetto and other such products have only rarely been shown to have any impact whatsoever in reducing the actual volume (or size) of an enlarged prostate. Beta-sitosterol has some evidence of providing anti-inflammatory benefits however does not appear to provide the other therapeutic benefits of the ingredients in Prexamed™. Flower pollen extracts, on the contrary, in most trials lasting three months or longer have shown the ability to reduce the actual size of the prostate combined with the other therapeutic benefits discussed in “How does Prexamed™ work”.

14. If I am 45 and have no prostate problems that I am aware of, should I take Prexamed™?

Virtually all men risk developing some form of prostate problems as they enter later life. Between the ages of 40 and 59, nearly 60% of men can be shown to exhibit some symptoms of the effects of enlarged prostate conditions produced by benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH). It is preferable to delay or prevent the onset of these issues rather than to wait until symptoms develop and then to treat them. And remember the other benefits of Prexamed™ related to metabolic functioning, reducing inflammation, and the immune system.

15. Why is zinc important in prostate health? What effect does Prexamed™ have on the body’s level of zinc in prostatic fluids and prostate tissue?

Prostatic fluid contains an anti-bacterial factor which includes free zinc as one of the most important active ingredients. Men with low levels of zinc in their prostatic fluid seem more prone to chronic prostatitis. Research has shown the flower pollen ingredients in Prexamed™ have the effect of increasing the level of zinc in prostatic fluids and prostate tissues with beneficial results.

16. Does Prexamed™ play a role in women’s health?

A lesser known fact is that women also can benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of the flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ in some cases of menstrual and other urinary tract problems can be useful in treating urinary tract complaints in women. The anti-inflammatory and smooth muscle-relaxing actions are active in the bladder and urethra also for women. Similarly, the immunomodulating effects of flower pollen extracts can have other significant beneficial effects.

17. Is Prexamed™ new?

Toomey Health Products, LLC is the sole provider of Prexamed™. Scandinavian scientists developed the use of specialty combinations of flower pollen extracts designed to reduce the effects of enlarged prostate conditions produced by benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH) more than 50 years ago – and the flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ have been used in Europe and Japan for over 50 years. Prexamed™ has not been available in the United States for many years and is now available exclusively from Toomey Health Products, LLC.

18. The word pollen suggests the possibility of allergies. Are there significant allergic reactions to Prexamed™?

Known potential allergens are removed as a part of the refining process. There have been no reported incidents of significant allergic reactions or significant adverse side effects associated with the flower pollen ingredients in Prexamed™.

19. Are there other potential harmful side effects from taking Prexamed™?

The flower pollen extracts used in Prexamed™ have been subject much research and numerous clinical trials for over 50 years. There have been no reported incidents of significant allergic reactions or significant adverse side effects associated with Prexamed™.

20. How long does it take for Prexamed™ to relieve the effects of benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH)?

Continued reduction in the measured size of the prostate has been found, in clinical trials, to occur over a period of six months usage.

21. Can Prexamed™ help before the onset of symptoms of and enlarged prostate or BPH?

Research indicates the best time to begin taking Prexamed™ is before prostate problems develop. Remember, virtually all men risk developing some form of prostate problem as they enter later life. In addition, the flower pollen ingredients in Prexamed™ have been used in Europe and Japan for over 50 years to improve metabolic functioning, reduce inflammation, and support the immune system.

22. Where is Prexamed™ produced?

The plants harvested for the pollen used to produce the flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ are grown primarily in Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Prexamed™ is produced from only the highest quality raw materials under strict quality control standards. Prexamed™ is encapsulated and bottled in the United States in a CGMP certified facility.

23. What is a CGMP certified facility?

CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the United States Food and Drug Administration. CMGP regulations provide for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities. Prexamed™ is encapsulated and bottled in the United States in a CGMP certified facility.

24. Has Prexamed™ been the subject of any clinical trials?

The flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ were originally discovered in Scandinavia over 50 years ago as a supplement that enhances urogenital health and have been the subject of numerous clinical trials and research studies since that time. Double-Blind Studies - The flower pollen extract ingredients in Prexamed™ have been the subject of double-blind placebo-controlled studies and double-blind parallel studies vs. saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol, and other prostate supplements. When subjects experiencing moderate symptomatic benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH) used the pollen extracts for three months, significant relief was experienced, with 60 – 90% of the subjects having reported improvements within 1 – 3 months in urinary tract discomfort and related symptoms. After three months, overall clinical efficacy was reported to be approximately 85%.

25. What is a double-blind placebo-controlled study?

A research study in which one group of people is given the treatment being studied and a second group (the Control Group) is given a placebo, an inactive substance that will have no effect. Neither the participants in the study nor the researchers know which people are in each group to eliminate any bias in the findings.

26. Where can I get Prexamed™?

Prexamed™ has not been available in the United States for many years and is available exclusively from Toomey Health Products, LLC.

27. What is flower pollen extract? How is it different from flower pollen?

Flower pollen consists of fine grains of plant material produced by the male portion of plants that are used in the reproductive cycle to pollinate (fertilize) the female portion of the plant. Flower pollen extract is the portion of pollen gathered from plants that is produced and refined under carefully controlled conditions to obtain certain desired constituents from raw pollen. Flower pollen extracts have used in various health-related applications for many years.

28. What is the consistency of flower pollen extracts?

The content of flower pollen extracts such as the ingredients in Prexamed™ can be closely controlled and standardized to produce consistency in active ingredients among batches.

29. Are Flower Pollen Extracts Digestible?

Researchers have concluded that flower pollen extracts are almost 100% assimilated in the digestion process.

30. How long have flower pollens been used as food supplements?

Written records show that flower pollens have been used as food supplements and for medicinal purposes for over 2,000 years dating back to China about 200 B.C.

31. What nutrients are found in flower pollens?

Flower pollens as a group are both nutrient-rich and chemically very complex. The exact composition depends upon the plant that produced the pollen. The following are ranges of compositions of typical pollens:

  • Water: 3-16%
  • Crude protein: 6-28%
  • Amino acids: up to 22%
  • Free amino acids: up to 6%
  • Lipids: 1-20%
  • Carbohydrates: up to 44%
  • Simple sugars: 4-10%
  • Carotenoids and flavonoids: 2-3%

32. What are other causes of prostate enlargement or other prostate issues?

Not all sources of prostate enlargement arise from hormonal alterations associated with aging, nor are all sources benign. Other conditions that may lead to prostate enlargement and/or a blockage in normal urine flow include:

  • Prostatitis – an inflammation of the prostate that may be accompanied by considerable pain and is often characterized as either bacterial or nonbacterial prostatitis.
  • Prostatodynia – has a number of symptoms similar to benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH).
  • Prostate Cancer – may have some similar symptoms or may produce no discernable symptoms.
